‘My Italian Secret/The Forgotten Heroes’ tells the WWII heroic story of thousands of courageous Italians including notable cycling hero Gino Bartali, Dr. Giovanni Borromeo, many religious staff and high-ranking officials of the Catholic Church, and hundreds of locals who put their lives on the line to help save many Jews throughout Italy. They were all part of those who carried out clandestine activities to protect and save Jews from Nazi extermination. They defied the Nazis and Fascists to hide, rescue and protect thousands of innocent Jewish people and others in Italy during the Holocaust. Gino Bartali was a world renown legendary Tour de France champion and Dr. Borromeo was the Head Doctor of Medicine at the Fatebenefratelli hospital, both participants of the covert underground to protect the Jews. Bartali risked his life smuggling fake identification documents in the frame of his bicycle and Dr. Borromeo invented a fictitious disease to scare the SS away from the hospital where he was hiding Jews.

The documentary depicts not only the liberators but also a number of those who survived pursuit by the Nazis. Many were able to escape capture and death with the help of many Italian protectors. This story tells the personal accounts that reflect this little known piece of history. Through these witnesses’ stories, viewers revisit a time when an entire continent was engulfed in genocide. They will learn how Jewish people living in Italy, including foreign Jews, survived the Holocaust. On September 8, 1943 the Nazi’s invaded Northern Italy and the deportation of thousands of Jewish people and others to Auschwitz began. These men and women and their network of partisans worked tirelessly saving the lives of more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews.

The film is narrated by Isabella Rossellini with Robert Loggia as the voice of Gino Bartali.

Solo Mio Storyline:

For a 21st-century romcom, Solo Mio feels delightfully old-fashioned This is really a movie about love, not lust. And while it does have a mild sensual wink or two, the asides would still fit reasonably comfortably in a romcom from the 1950s or ‘60s. Profanity is about nonexistent and is limited to one use of “a–” and about three more of “h—.” It’s a romantic comedy drama that’s based on true stories starring Kevin James, Jonathan Roumie, and even the acting of Andrea Bocelli. It was shot entirely in Italy, Rome and Tuscany including a brief Siena shot of the Palio, and Bocelli’s ‘vineyard’ exemplifying Italy’s vibrant culture, food, and beauty. Such are the sweet, simple messages found inSolo Mio—a romcom confection as sweet and refreshing as a scoop of gelato. It’s very entertaining and with the entire movie being filmed in Italy made it especially enjoyable with a surprised ending. The music is fantastic especially Bocelli’s performances.
